Veronica Escobar defeated incumbent Betti Flores on Tuesday to become county commissioner of Precinct 2. "I'm very excited," Escobar said just after the final results were in for the primary runoff. Attorney Rick Olivo pulled away from Laure Searls in Tuesday's runoff election to win the Democratic Party's nomination and face three-term Republican incumbent Dan Haggerty this fall for the Precinct 4 seat on the County Commissioners Court. "Ultimately, what made the difference was getting out and talking to people one on one" in a door-to-door campaign, Olivo said. "I plan to keep working hard discussing the issues I think are important to all of El Paso."

Gilbert Sanchez won a second term as El Paso County district clerk. Sanchez, 38, handily defeated Irma Jaloma-Keith, 53, a former deputy chief of the district clerk's office and a retired sheriff's deputy, in the Democratic primary runoff on Tuesday. There is no Republican opponent for this race in the November general election.

Propelled by the endorsement of three of his previous opponents, Anthony Cobos defeated Barbara Perez in Tuesday's Democratic runoff and will become the El Paso County judge. "This is a political rebirth for me," said Cobos, who last year lost in his bid for re-election to the City Council. "There is a big difference between where I am now and where I was three years ago. I will no longer be manipulated, blinded and influenced by special interest."

Now that former El Paso County Democratic Party chair candidate Rita Sariñana has endorsed Evelina Ortega rather than Daniel Anchondo, both candidates are trying to set themselves apart in what could be a tight primary runoff election. Sariñana claimed 22 percent of the votes cast in March, and Ortega received 30 percent. Anchondo received 48 percent.

Jaloma-Keith has worked as chief deputy for the district clerk for two years, and she worked for the Sheriff's Office before that for 26 years. While there, she was supervisor for the Crime Records, Evidence and Forensic Section for 13 years.
